Period Delay

Need to delay your period for an upcoming event or holiday? We’re here to help. If your period is due at an inconvenient time - perhaps during a special celebration, travel plans, or a big event - Hughes Pharmacy offers an effective solution with period delay tablets. Using a medication called norethisterone, you may be able to delay your period for up to three weeks.

Please note that while this treatment is effective for many, period delay cannot be guaranteed.

Already Taking the Contraceptive Pill?

If you're using a Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC), you may not need additional medication. You can delay your period by skipping the 7-day break and starting your next pill pack immediately. This method is generally safe when used occasionally but should be discussed with a pharmacist or GP first.

What to Expect During the Consultation

Our trained team will carry out a short consultation to ensure the treatment is suitable for you. This includes a review of:

  • Your medical history
  • Any current medications
  • Your blood pressure and Body Mass Index (BMI)

This service is available for patients aged 16 and over.

About Norethisterone

The treatment involves a hormone tablet called norethisterone, which helps maintain the womb lining and temporarily delays your period. Once you stop taking the tablets, your period usually resumes within a few days. Important: Norethisterone is not a contraceptive. You will still need to use appropriate contraception if you want to prevent pregnancy. This medication should only be used occasionally and for no more than 3 weeks at a time.

Who Should Not Use Norethisterone?

This treatment may not be suitable if you have any of the following conditions or risk factors:

  • History or risk of blood clots
  • A BMI over 30
  • Limited mobility or use of a wheelchair
  • Liver disease
  • Breast cancer (past or present)
  • Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding
  • Genital tract cancers
  • High risk of arterial disease
  • Migraines with aura
  • Pregnancy

If you're unsure, our pharmacist will assess your medical history during your consultation.

Medication Interactions

Do not take norethisterone if you're currently on a combined contraceptive pill. If you're using a mini pill (progesterone-only), this treatment may still be appropriate. You should also avoid norethisterone if you're taking:

  • St John’s Wort
  • Certain epilepsy medications (carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, topiramate)
  • Ulipristal (e.g. EllaOne or Esmya)
Possible Side Effects

Some people may experience mild side effects, such as:

  • Bloating
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Light spotting

These are usually temporary and tend to resolve as your body adjusts.
